Description

The Bead by Bead on the Appalachian Trail necklace is a unique representation of the 2,200-mile footpath stretching from Georgia to Maine. Each of the 14 states the AT passes through is represented by a different colored bead, and the number of beads corresponds to the mileage per state. Each necklace comes with a tracking ring that can be moved along the necklace to track a hiker’s progress or mark a special place. The Bead by Bead on the Appalachian Trail necklace is the perfect gift for the hiker in your life, a celebratory or inspirational piece for yourself, and can even be worn by those at home to follow their favorite hiker along the trail.

Each 18” necklace is handcrafted with durable waxed cord, a sterling silver clasp, and sturdy glass beads. It is rugged enough to be worn every day on-trail, and striking enough to jazz up any town outfit. Whether in the woods or at a wedding, it’s a great tool to steer any conversation towards your favorite subject!

How to choose a bead style: The main difference between the two styles – round or square beads – is the length of the beaded portion of the necklace. The beaded portion for the square beads is 13.5”, and for the round beads is 10”. So, if you would like to look in the mirror and see the whole trail from end to end on the front of your neck, choose the round bead style. If you’d rather have the beads wrap farther around your neck, choose the square beads. A few of the square beads also have more shine to them if you prefer a little sparkle around your neck.

Nice necklace, but clasp is difficult to work

I love the necklace, but the tiny clasp is far too small for my fingers. I guess it would be easier for a woman or a man with small fingers, but mine are average for a guy, and I find it almost impossible to open the clasp while I am wearing the necklace. I could leave it on 24/7, but I wear other necklaces which would hide this one because the beads are so small compared to the others. I would wear it around my wrist as a bracelet, but my wrists aren't large enough for the necklace to fit without having some beads overlapping - actually, quite a few would overlap. My next option is to restring the necklace using stretch cord, so I can pull it over my head without using any clasp at all. I have to experiment to find the smallest length of elastic cord that will allow the necklace to slip over my head, while not hanging too far below my neck where the beads would be 'lost'.

    A Unique Gift

I saw this necklace and liked that fact that it represented the states that the A.T. went thru and you could move the 'marker' along to track your progress. How cleaver!

    Rock Lizard Approved!!

My 11 year old daughter and I are working our way through the trail -- between sections and a thru attempt. This is a simple, elegant and beautiful necklace that -- other than sleeping, showering and working out -- she hasn't taken off since getting it in the mail. She loves seeing the ring to mark our progress and reading through the card that comes with the necklace explaining why each bead was chosen to represent each state and which trail location each bead represents. As her dad I not only enjoy seeing her passion celebrated, but also the mindfulness and reflection on our trail time that this necklace has sparked.
