Best Hikes of the Appalachian Trail: New England guides hikers of all experience levels (including kids) through 45 day hikes on the Appalachian Trail, concentrated on the five northernmost states; Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. This illustrated paperback includes descriptions, photographs, and charts for each hike, as well as GPS-based trailhead coordinates, trail maps, and elevation profiles. In addition, hikers are provided trail ratings based on scenery, wildlife, seclusion, waterfalls, history, geology, wildflowers, difficulty, views, and accessibility for kids and dogs.

From the back cover:

“'If you’re looking for the best day hikes on the Appalachian Trial, look no further. You hold in your hands an exciting guide to outdoor fun. These 45 hikes have been tested as suitable for families with young kids, veteran hikers, and everyone in between.'

The hikes include some of the most dramatic peaks along the A.T. as it winds its way through New England – from the relatively small but steep mountains in western Connecticut and Massachusetts, up through the Green Mountains of Vermont and the majestic White Mountains of New Hampshire, and finally the long trek across the mountains of western Maine to the mighty Katahdin, the northern terminus of the A.T. itself. This carefully curated collection of short segments of America’s best-loved trail system offers a new approach to enjoying the granddaddy of America’s Trails.

There are relatively mellow hikes, long steep hikes, and hikes through dense forests. You’ll find the best of the A.T. along the way, such as a hidden garden of dozends of white rock cairns, dramatic Cliffside waterfalls, remote pristine ponds, and sweeping views of the New England backcountry."

  1. A gift that will keep giving 5 Star Review

    (Submitted on May 6th 2021)

My daughter and her partner are outdoor enthusiasts and moved to Vermont last year. The variety of trails in this book will give them a lot of choices for weekends and vacations and help them get to know the region better--and safely.

  2. Answers all my questions! 5 Star Review

    (Submitted on Feb 22nd 2020)

Being from Texas, this book put my worries at ease. Not only are the descriptions of each walk very specific, the extensive information in the introduction covers everything I wasn't sure about, having only hiked in Scotland. The ratings cover issues most important to me: condition, scenery, kids, difficulty and crowds. Love the elevation profile and complete information for each hike:-)

  3. Hikes in New England 5 Star Review

    (Submitted on Aug 10th 2018)

I’m planning a trip to Maine in a few weeks and wanted to hike some of the AT.

This book is perfect for planning purposes as it rates different trails according to views, difficulty, wildlife, seclusion, best for kids, wildflowers etc., depending on what is looking for in a hike. The chapters are broken down by states and extremely descriptive per hike and also include pictures of each hike. The perfect guidebook!
