Setting out alone, Jennifer transitions from overconfident college grad to Trail student, finding kindness, humor, sadness, and situations she never imagined ahead of time. An extraordinarily well-written account by an extraordinary hiker. Jennifer went on to hike twice more, finishing in 2011 in less than 46 1/2 days.
A 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year
From the back cover:
After graduating from college, Jennifer embarks on a four-month journey on the Appalachian Trail, a 2,175-mile footpath that stretches from Georgia to Maine. Though her family thinks she’s crazy, she sets out alone to hike the entire trail.
She quickly discovers that thru-hiking is harder than she had anticipated. She battles blisters, aching shoulders, and exhaustion, but finds everyday tasks like cooking for herself and sleeping on the wooden floorboards of trail shelters to be unexpected challenges.
Along the trail, she meets incredible characters who make her solo hike feel much less lonely. She encounters Trail Angels around every bend and builds a new trail family. She also meets a handsome stranger whose friendship adds even more excitement to the trail.
